Rivina humilis
Rivina humilis, commonly known as pigeonberry or rougeplant, is a perennial herb native to the …
Described originally by Carl Linnaeus, Rivina octandra serves as the fundamental basionym for the vigorous Neotropical climbing shrub now scientifically recognized as Trichostigma octandrum. This robust liana thrives in a variety of forest habitats across the Americas, establishing itself through rapid growth and highly flexible stems. The species remains a prominent feature of tropical and subtropical ecosystems, frequently encountered climbing over surrounding vegetation.
This species is characterized by its climbing, liana-like growth form, with stems that can reach significant lengths and span across the forest canopy. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, alternate, and typically possess a glabrous surface. It produces elongated racemes of small, apetalous flowers that feature four sepals and, true to the specific epithet octandra, precisely eight stamens.
Upon successful pollination, the flowers develop into small, fleshy berries. These fruits mature from a reddish hue to a deep purple or black color.
Due to the remarkable flexibility and tensile strength of its stems, local populations have traditionally utilized the plant in basketry and for crafting hoops for wooden barrels. This historical utility directly inspired the widespread common name hoopvine. Additionally, certain indigenous communities within its native range have documented its use in traditional medicinal practices.
